The 33rd Annual Pumpkin Classic Debate Tournament

Dear Members of the BC Kootenays, Central Interior, and Southern
Interior Debating Regions,

The DSABC and J.L. Crowe Secondary School are pleased to invite you
to attend the 33rd Annual Pumpkin Classic Debate Tournament
to be held online for the very first time!

New additions for this virtual event have been highlighted in blue.


Event Information:
Host Platform: Zoom Videoconferencing (link will be released after registration is complete)

Date: Saturday, November 14th 2020

Fees (non-refundable):

  • Competitors: $10/per team

  • Payments must be made online by the registration deadline.

Tournament Categories:

  • Novice Category: Students in Grades 6, 7, and 8 who have never participated in debate before

  • Junior Category: Students in Grades 9 and under

  • Senior Category: Students in Grades 10 and over

Tournament Format:

  • Novice Category

    • All rounds (1, 2, 3, and 4) - Cross-Examination Style​​

      • Speaker times: 4,3,4,3,7,3,7,3, 3,3 

  • Junior Category:

    • Rounds 1 and 2 - Cross-Examination Style​​

      • Speaker times: 4,3,4,3,7,3,7,3, 3,3 

    • Rounds 3 and 4: Canadian National Debate Format (CNDF)

      • Speaker times: 6,6,6,6,3,3
         

  • Senior Category:

    • Rounds 1 and 2 - Cross-Examination Style​​

      • Speaker times: 5,3,5,3,8,3,8,3, 3,3

    • Rounds 3 and 4: Canadian National Debate Format (CNDF)

      • Speaker times: 8,8,8,8,4,4

All topics will be prepared beforehand:

  • Junior/Senior Category: Be it resolved that (BIRT) free-market capitalism be mandatory (Cross-EX)

  • Junior/Senior Category: This house would (THW) make free-market capitalism be mandatory (CNDF)
     

  • Novice Category: Be it resolved that (BIRT) same-sex schools are more effective than mixed schools (Cross-EX)

Technical Information

  • The Zoom Meeting will be password protected for the security of all participants.

  • Screen-sharing will be disabled at all times.

  • Any individual found in the Zoom Meeting who is not registered as part of a school delegation or as an external observer will be removed from the meeting immediately and without warning.

  • All participants (and judges) must have access to a device with a working microphone and camera for the duration of the tournament. A full technical guide will be released after registration is complete.

Chaperone Policy

  • All students are required to have a school-approved "chaperone" online at all times. The DSABC accepts no liability for any student left unsupervised at any DSABC-sponsored event, whether online or in-person.

  • A chaperone can be a coach, teacher sponsor or parent/guardian who is authorized by their child’s school and is willing to take on all chaperone related responsibilities.

  • Senior students are not considered chaperones. 

  • All adults acting as chaperones are expected to uphold the DSABC Code of Ethics.
